Pearl River County is a county in the US state of Mississippi . The county seat is Poplarville . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located almost in the extreme south of Mississippi, borders Louisiana to the west and is about 25 miles from the Gulf of Mexico to the south. Pearl River County covers an area of 2,121 square kilometers, of which 20 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by the following counties and parishes:

history
Pearl River County was formed on February 22, 1890 from parts of Hancock County and Marion County. It was named after the Pearl River that runs here .
One site in the county is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as of February 2, 2018.

According to the 2000 census , Pearl River County had 48,621 people in 18,078 households and 13,576 families. The population density was 23 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 85.55 percent white, 12.18 percent African American, 0.50 percent Native American, 0.27 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.34 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.13 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 1.41 percent of the population.
Of the 18,078 households, 34.8 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 58.3 percent were married couples living together, 12.5 percent were single mothers, and 24.9 percent were non-families. 21.7 percent of all households were single households and 9.0 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size 3.08.
27.0 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 9.4 percent between 18 and 24, 27.1 percent between 25 and 44, 23.9 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 12.6 percent were 65 years or older . The median age was 36 years. Statistically, for every 100 females there were 94.4 males and for every 100 females aged 18 or over there were 91.0 males.
The average income of a household amounted to 30,912 USD , for a family is 35,924 USD. Males had a median income of $ 30,370 versus $ 21,519 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,160. About 15.5 percent of families and 18.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line .
