The Holmes County is a county in the US state of Mississippi . The county seat is Lexington , which was named after a battleground in the American Revolutionary War .

history

D. Holmes

Holmes County was formed on February 19, 1833 from parts of Yazoo County. It is named after David Holmes (1769-1832), the last governor (1809-1817) of the Mississippi Territory , first governor of the state of Mississippi (1817-1820) and US Senator (1820-1825).

As of the 2000 census , Holmes County had 21,609 people in 7,314 households and 5,229 families. The population density was 11 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 20.47 percent white, 78.66 percent African American, 0.12 percent Native American, 0.15 percent Asian and 0.07 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.52 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.90 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups.

Of the 7,314 households, 36.0 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 34.9 percent were married couples living together, 31.2 percent were single mothers, and 28.5 percent were non-families. 26.3 percent of all households were single households and 12.1 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.86 and the average family size was 3.48 people.

32.1 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 12.4 percent between 18 and 24, 24.8 percent between 25 and 44, 18.3 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 12.4 percent were 65 years or older . The average age was 30 years. Statistically, for every 100 females there were 87.3 males and for every 100 females aged 18 or over there were 79.3 males.

The average income of a household amounted to 17,235 USD , for a family is 21,757 USD. Males had a median income of $ 23,720 versus $ 17,883 for females. The per capita income was $ 10,683. About 35.9 percent of families and 41.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line .
