David Holmes

David Holmes (born March 10, 1769 in York County , Province of Pennsylvania , † August 20, 1832 in Winchester , Virginia ) was an American politician, the last governor of the Mississippi Territory and the first governor of the state of Mississippi .

Life

Holmes was born in Pennsylvania and moved to Virginia with his family as a child. From 1797 to 1808 he was a member of the US House of Representatives in Virginia before he was named fourth governor of the Mississippi Territory. Holmes was very popular; his appointment marked the end of a long period of disputes in the territory .

In 1817, Mississippi became the 20th state to join the United States and Holmes was elected its first governor. He was sworn in in October 1817, although state sovereignty did not become official until December 1817. During his tenure, the state's legal system was introduced, the state militia was established and the land east of the Pearl River , which was given to the Choctaw Indians, was reorganized. After his two-year term in office, he decided not to run again in the next election in 1819.

1820 Holmes was selected as one of Mississippi's senators in Congress sent, however, came in 1825 back after he was re-elected as governor. His deteriorating health forced him to resign as governor after only six months in office (January to July 1826).

Holmes then returned to his home state of Virginia, where his health continued to deteriorate. He died near Winchester in 1832 and was buried in Mount Hebron Cemetery.
