The county lies on the west bank of the Susquehanna River and is separated from Maryland to the south by the Mason-Dixon Line . York County covers an area of 2,358 square kilometers, of which 15 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following neighboring counties:

York County was formed on August 19, 1749 from former parts of Lancaster County. It was named after the English county of Yorkshire or its capital York .
