The Westmoreland County is a county in the US state of Pennsylvania . At the 2010 census , the county had 365,169 people and a population density of 137.5 people per square kilometer. The administrative seat ( county seat ) is Greensburg .

Westmoreland County is part of the metropolitan area around the city of Pittsburgh .

The county is located in southwest Pennsylvania on the Monongahela River and the Allegheny River , the two headwaters of the Ohio River . Westmoreland has an area of ​​2,684 square kilometers, of which 28 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history

The county was formed on February 26, 1773 from former parts of Bedford County. It was named after the traditional English county of Westmorland and because the county originally comprised all of western Pennsylvania.

Historic Buildings

The historic John Walter Farmstead homestead is located in Washington Township . The property was listed on July 21, 1995 on the National Register of Historic Places with number 95000885.

One place in the county has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Bushy Run Battlefield , which was the site of the Pontiac uprising . 51 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of July 25, 2018).
