Dauphin County is a county in the state of Pennsylvania in the United States . In 2010, the county had 268,100 residents and a population density of 197 people per square kilometer. The county seat has been Harrisburg since 1812 .
The county was detached from Lancaster County on March 4, 1785 and named after the Dauphin , the French heir to the throne. County Seat is Harrisburg .

The county was founded on March 4, 1785 and named after the Dauphin Louis Joseph Xavier François de Bourbon in honor of the alliance with France in the War of Independence .
Four places in the county have National Historic Landmark status , including the Pennsylvania State Capitol . 72 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of July 23, 2018).

The county has an area of 1,444 square kilometers, of which 84 square kilometers are water. The county is bounded on its western edge by the Susquehanna River . It is bordered clockwise by the counties: Northumberland County , Schuylkill County , Lebanon County , Lancaster County , York County , Cumberland County, and Perry County .
