The Fayette County is a county US state of Pennsylvania . At the 2010 census , the county had 136,606 people and a population density of 66.7 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Uniontown .

Fayette County is part of the metropolitan area around the city of Pittsburgh .

The county is located in southwest Pennsylvania on the east bank of the Monongahela River , one of the two headwaters of the Ohio River ; to the south it is separated from Maryland and West Virginia by the Mason-Dixon Line . Fayette County covers an area of ​​2,067 square kilometers, of which 20 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history

La Fayette

Fayette County was formed on September 26, 1783 from Westmoreland County . It was named after Marie  -  Joseph Motier, Marquis de La Fayette (1757-1834), a French general who was instrumental in the American War of Independence and the French Revolution .

The county has two protected sites of outstanding historical importance, the Fort Necessity National Battlefield and the Friendship Hill National Historic Site . Five other locations have National Historic Landmark status . 68 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of July 18, 2018).

The racial the population was composed of 93.3 percent white, 4.6 percent African American, 0.1 percent Native American, 0.3 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.3 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.8 percent of the population.

20.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 61.7 percent were between 18 and 64 and 18.0 percent were 65 years or older. 50.9 percent of the population was female.
