Mountain brake

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The mountain brake is a rod that is firmly connected to a carriage or wagon via a chain and that drags behind the wagon as it climbs the mountain. If you have to stop on the mountain, you let the car roll a little downhill. The metal tip of the stick gets stuck in the ground and finally stops the car completely. This allows the draft animals to rest.

The pole can be attached to the carriage with a leather strap - for trips across the flat country or when going uphill again.
