Erie County is a county in the US state of Pennsylvania . At the 2000 census , the county had 280,843 residents and a population density of 135 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Erie .
history
The county was formed on March 12, 1800, and finally organized in 1803. It was named after the Erie Indians .

The county has an area of 4036 square kilometers, of which 1959 square kilometers are water. Erie County is bordered on the southwest by Ashtabula County ( Ohio ), on the south by Crawford County , in the east on Chautauqua County ( New York ), in the southeast of Warren County and the north by Lake Erie .
