The Greene County is a county in the US state of Pennsylvania . At the 2010 census , the county had 38,686 people and a population density of 25.9 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Waynesburg .
geography
The county is located in the extreme southwest of Pennsylvania on the west bank of the Monongahela River , one of the headwaters of the Ohio River ; to the west and south it is bordered by West Virginia , the southern boundary being formed by the extension of the Mason-Dixon Line . history
Greene County was formed from Washington County on February 9, 1796 . It was named after Nathanael Greene (1742–1786), a general in the Continental Army in the American War of Independence .
One place in the county has National Historic Landmark status , the WA Young and Sons Foundry and Machine Shop . 41 structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of July 23, 2018).
