Susquehanna County is a county in the US state of Pennsylvania . At the 2000 census , the county had 42,238 people and a population density of nearly 20 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Montrose .

history

The county was formed on February 21, 1810 from parts of Luzerne County and named after the Susquehanna River . The final organization of the county took place in 1812.

Eight structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of July 24, 2018).

The county has an area of ​​2,156 square kilometers, of which 25 square kilometers are water. About 60 percent of the area is forested.

Demographic data

According to the United States Census in 2000 , Susquehanna County had 42,238 people, there were 16,529 households and 11,785 families. The population density was 20 inhabitants per km². There were 21,829 housing units with an average population density of 10 inhabitants per km². 98.54% were white , 0.3% black or African American , 0.15% American Indian , 0.22% Asian American , 0.01% Pacific islander , 0.17% other racial, and 0.6% multi-racial . 0.67% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos of all races. 16.1% had German ancestors, 15.4% English , 15.1% Irish , 10.6% American , 8.6% Italian and 7.7% Polish .

There were 16,529 households, in 31.9% of whom there were minor children living, in 57.7% married couples lived together, in 8.6% had a single mother and in 28.7% lived a single. 24.3% were single and 11.5% were single people who were 65 or older. An average household had 2.53 people and an average family had 2.99 people.

25.5% were younger than 18 years, 6.7% between 18 and 24, 27.1% between 25 and 44, 25.2% between 45 and 64 and 15.5% 65 or older. The median age was 40 years. 50.3% of all persons were female, 49.7% were male. Among the adults, 51.1% were female and 48.9% were male.
