history

Clearfield County was formed on March 26, 1804 from parts of Lycoming County and Huntingdon County. The name refers to the expulsion of the Indians from the area, "clear field" (German: "cleared field"). Three years later, three townships named Beccaria , Bradford and Chincleclamousche were formed in what was then still a sparsely populated area in the Alleghanies . In 1812 the county became a separate administrative unit. Numerous townships were formed in the following decades (see below). The last foundations were Bigler (1883) and Cooper (1884). The first borough, named Clearfield , was established in 1840, the last - Westover - in 1895.

Clearfield became the administrative seat of the county of the same name in 1805. The first courthouse was built in 1814 and replaced in 1862 by the current brick building with a bell tower (including an extension from 1882). The current district prison was built in 1981, the previous building from 1872 now serves as an office building.

After the Revolutionary War , the land in what would become Clearfield County was divided into parcels of 250 to 1000 acres (1 to 4 km²) and much of it was given to war veterans. The first white man, Captain Edward Ricketts , settled in what is now Bigler Township around 1783 . The county was largely settled between 1830 and 1880. German immigrants from the Pirmasens area settled in the Troutville area since the 1830s .

20 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of July 22, 2018).
