Armstrong County is a county in the state of Pennsylvania in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 72,392 people and a population density of 43 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Kittanning .

The county covers an area of 1,721 square kilometers, of which 27 square kilometers are water. Armstrong County is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Clarion County , Jefferson County , Indiana County , Westmoreland County , Allegheny County, and Butler County .

The county was formed on May 12, 1800, after the military and politicians junior John Armstrong named.
