Venango County is a county in the state of Pennsylvania in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 57,565 people and a population density of 33 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Franklin .

history

The county was formed on March 12, 1800 and finally organized on April 1, 1805. It was named after the Lenni Lenape village of the same name , which was located at the mouth of what is now the French River and the Allegheny River . Venango means "otter" translated into German.

One place in the county has National Historic Landmark status , the Drake Oil Well . 19 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of July 25, 2018).
