Erie [ ˈɪəri ] is a city in the northwest of the US state Pennsylvania with 98,593 inhabitants (as of 2016). The city is located on Lake Erie and is the county seat of Erie County .
Erie is Pennsylvania's fourth largest city after Philadelphia , Pittsburgh and Allentown .
The place is the hometown of Niagara , a brig that was commanded by Oliver Hazard Perry in the " Battle of Lake Erie " in 1813 . Today, the Niagara is the official flagship of the state of Pennsylvania. Because Erie is the hometown of the ship, the city is also called "The Flagship City".

history
For the first time, the French settled in the Erie area. They built Fort Presque Isle in 1753. It served as a defensive post against the English.
The city of Erie was part of the Erie Triangle claimed by the states of Connecticut , Massachusetts , New York, and Pennsylvania . In 1792 the area of the city officially became part of Pennsylvania. The city was only founded in 1795.
Since 1853 the city has been the seat of the Roman Catholic diocese of Erie .
In 2007, the city received a donation of US $ 100 million from a donor who wanted to remain anonymous, with the task of distributing the money to the city's aid organizations.
