Jay Migliori (born November 14, 1930 in Erie (Pennsylvania) , † September 2, 2001 in Mission Viejo , California ) was an American jazz and studio musician ( tenor and baritone saxophone , clarinet , flute ).

biography

Migliori comes from a musical family, began playing alto saxophone and attended the St. Louis Institute of Music from 1949 to 1950 . In 1951/52 he was a member of the 571st Air Force Band in Texas . After his discharge from the army, he studied at Berklee School of Music . During his studies in Boston in 1953 he played with Miles Davis and in 1954 with Charlie Parker . In early 1957 he became a member of the Woody Herman Orchestra, with which he also went on tour in South America. In 1959 he moved to Los Angeles and worked there as a freelance studio musician ; From 1961 he was a member of a group of talented session musicians called The Wrecking Crew . As a result, he was involved in more than 4,000 record productions, for example with Glen Campbell , Frank Sinatra , Ray Charles , The Beach Boys (" God Only Knows ", 1966) or Celine Dion . He also played in the city's jazz clubs. In 1971 he was on a European tour with Frank Zappa . From 1972 to 1984 he was a member of the Supersax formation . He also played with his own formations, with which some albums were created, as well as with the band leaders Stan Kenton , Maynard Ferguson , Gil Evans , Terry Gibbs , David Axelrod and Louie Bellson . He died of colon cancer in 2001 .
