Dungarvan ( Irish : Dún Garbhán ) is a port city in County Waterford in the south of the Republic of Ireland .
The place
Dungarvan is on the south coast of Ireland and is the administrative seat of Waterford County . Its Irish name goes back to Saint Garbhán, who built a church here in the 7th century, and means "Garbhán's fortress". The city is traversed and divided into two parts by the Colligan River ( Abhainn Choilligeáin ), which flows into the Celtic Sea and the Atlantic Ocean via the St. George's Canal . The causeway and the single arch bridge spanning the river were built by the Dukes of Devonshire . The population of Dungarvan in the 2016 census was 8223 people.
In the district north of the Colligan River, called Abbeyside ( Dún na Mainistreach ), the remains of an Augustinian monastery from the 4th century exist integrated into a Roman Catholic church . Johann Ohneland built a castle at the port of Dungarvan .
