Austin Deasy

Austin Deasy ( Irish Aibhistín Mac an Déisigh , born August 26, 1936 in Dungarvan , County Waterford , † June 10, 2017 in Waterford ) was an Irish politician of the Fine Gael .

biography

Deasy initially worked as a teacher and began his political career in 1973 when he was appointed a member of the Senate ( Seanad Éireann ) by then Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) Liam Cosgrave . He was then elected for the first time as a candidate for Fine Gael in 1977 as a member of the House of Commons ( Dáil Éireann ) and, after seven subsequent re-elections, represented the interests of the Waterford constituency there until 2002 .

After Fine Gael's election victory, Prime Minister Garret FitzGerald named him Minister of Agriculture in his cabinet on December 14, 1982 . He held this office until the end of FitzGerald's tenure on March 10, 1987.

Most recently, Deasy was Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs from December 10, 1997 to 2002.

Successor as MP for the constituency of Waterford was his son John Deasy .
