Brendan Smith ( Irish Breandán Mac Gabhann , born June 1, 1956 in Cavan ) is an Irish politician of the Fianna Fáil and since May 8, 2008 Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.

biography

Smith was initially a civil servant and most recently a ministerial advisor. He began his own political career in 1992 as a candidate for the Fianna Fáil with the first election to the deputy ( Teachta Dála ) of the Lower House ( Dáil Éireann ). Since then he has represented the constituency of Cavan-Monaghan .

In September 2004 he became Minister of State at the Minister for Agriculture and Food. As part of a government reshuffle, Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) Bertie Ahern appointed him Minister of State on June 20, 2007 with special responsibility for children with cabinet rank.

After Brian Cowen became Prime Minister on May 7, 2008, he was appointed Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food as part of the new cabinet formation.
