Cavan ( ˈkævən ; Irish An Cabhán , English The Hollow ) is a city in the north-east central interior of the Republic of Ireland near the border with Northern Ireland and the capital of the county of the same name . The population of Cavans including the surrounding area was determined in the 2016 Census to be 10,914, which means that the number of residents has more than doubled since 1991.

Cavan is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kilmore . Construction of the St. Patrick and St. Felim Cathedral began in 1938.

history

The more recent history of Cavan begins with the establishment of a castle in the village by the O'Reilly family in the late 13th century, around the same time as the Franciscan monastery was founded on site. In the late 19th century, Cavan became a major railway hub. Today Cavan is primarily important as a traffic junction and for the supply of around 30,000 people living within a radius of 16 km from the city.

Cavan is on the N3 , which runs from Dublin in the east via Navan diagonally through the country to Ballyshannon on the northwest coast of Ireland and from there as the N15 on via Donegal Town into County Donegal . In a south-westerly direction the N55 leads to Athlone and as the N6 to Galway on the west coast, in a north-easterly direction the N54 via Monaghan to the A3 to Belfast .

National public transport is primarily covered by Bus Éireann , the Cavan several times a day and the like. a. connects to the Busáras in Dublin and to Enniskillen (NI) and Sligo . To the rail transport in Ireland Cavan has been disconnected since the 1960s.

Town twinning

Cavan's twin town has been the Jaunay clan in the French region of Poitou-Charentes since 1988 .
