Gerard Collins (* 16th October 1938 ) is an Irish politician of Fianna Fáil and former minister.

biography

Collins studied at teacher training and was then as teachers worked.

He began his political career on November 9, 1967, when he was elected as a candidate for the Fianna Fáil in a by-election for the first time as a member of the Dáil Éireann , where he represented the interests of the Limerick West constituency for thirty years until 1997 .

As early as 1969, Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) Jack Lynch appointed him Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Industry and Trade and in the Ministry for the Irish-speaking Areas ( Gaeltacht ). As early as May 9, 1970, Lynch appointed him Minister of Post and Telegraphy, and held this post until the Fianna Fáil was defeated on March 14, 1977.

After Lynch became Prime Minister again on July 5, 1977, this appointed Collins as Minister of Justice. He held this office under Lynch's successor Charles Haughey until June 30, 1981. In Haughey's second cabinet, he was foreign minister from March 9 to December 14, 1982 .

When Haughey became Prime Minister for the third time on March 10, 1987, Collins initially resumed the post of Justice Minister before he was foreign minister again from July 12, 1989 to the end of Haughey's term on February 11, 1992.

When he no longer ran for the elections for the 28th Dáil Éireann in 1997, his brother Michael J. Collins ran instead and won the mandate. Gerard Collins was a member of the European Parliament for two terms from 1994 to 2004 .
