Charles "Charlie" Flanagan (born November 1, 1956 in Mountmellick , County Laois ) is an Irish politician ( Fine Gael ).

Life

Flanagan grew up in Mountmellick. He attended Knockbeg College and then studied at University College Dublin (BA in History and Politics) and Law at the Incorporated Law Society of Ireland. He also worked as a lawyer for many years.
In the 1987 elections to Dáil Éireann , he was elected to the Irish House of Commons for the Fine Gael in the Laoighis-Offaly constituency. He replaced his father Oliver J. Flanagan , who had represented this constituency since 1943. Flanagan was re-elected in 1989 , 1992 and 1997 and was a member of the Dáil Éireann until 2002. From November 1, 1997 to June 25, 2000, he was Vice-Chairman of the British-Irish Inter-Parliamentary Body . In the 2002 elections he was not elected; he was re-elected in the 2007 , 2011 and 2016 elections. Under Enda Kenny , Prime Minister of Ireland from March 2011 to June 2017, Flanagan was Minister for Child and Youth Affairs from May 8, 2014 to July 11, 2014. He replaced Frances Fitzgerald , who in turn succeeded the resigned Attorney General Alan Shatter . From July 11, 2014 to June 14, 2017, he was Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade. Since June 14, 2017 he has been 'Minister for Justice and Equality' in Leo Varadkar's cabinet .

He is married and has two daughters.
