biography

Boland, who was an engineer by profession , was the older brother of Harry Boland , the temporary chairman of the Irish Republican Brotherhood .

He himself began his national political career as a Republican candidate in 1923 when he was elected Member of Parliament ( Teachta Dála ) of the Lower House ( Dáil Éireann ), although he did not take his seat in Parliament. In 1927 he was elected as a representative of Fianna Fáil in the House of Commons and belonged to it for the constituency of Roscommon after eleven subsequent re-elections until 1961.

In March 1932 he became Parliamentary Secretary to the President of the Executive Council (comparable to today's Prime Minister) of the Irish Free State and at the same time to the Minister of Defense and held these offices with the exception of a brief interruption until February 1933.

On November 11, 1936 he became Minister of Post and Telegraphy and held this office until July 21, 1937. At the same time he was Minister of Land from November 11, 1936 to September 8, 1939. On September 8, 1939 Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) Éamon de Valera appointed him Minister of Justice in his cabinet, to which he was a member until February 18, 1948.

After the Fianna Fáil won again in the general election in 1951, Boland was appointed Minister of Justice by Prime Minister de Valera on June 13, 1951 and held this post until the end of de Valera's term on June 2, 1954.

After he suffered an election defeat in 1961 and left the House of Commons, he became a member of the Senate ( Seanad Éireann ) as a representative of the group for industry and trade , of which he was last from 1965 to 1969 as a member nominated by the Prime Minister. In 1969 he decided not to apply again as a senator and withdrew from political life.

His son Kevin Boland was also a Member of Parliament and was dismissed as Minister in 1970 because of the Irish arms crisis . In protest he entered himself as vice president and trustee ( Trustee back) of Fianna Fáil.
