Pádraig Faulkner ( Irish Pádraig Ó Fachtna , born March 12, 1918 in Dundalk , County Louth , † June 1, 2012 in Drogheda ) was an Irish politician ( Fianna Fáil ), Minister and Chairman ( Ceann Comhairle ) of the House of Commons ( Dáil Éireann ).

Career

Faulkner first completed a teacher training course and then worked as a teacher at state schools.

He began his political career when he was first elected to the House of Commons (Dáil Éireann) as a candidate for Fianna Fáil in 1957. There he represented for 30 years until 1987 the interests of the Louth constituency , which coincided with the boundaries of County Louth at Faulkner's time .

From April 1965 to March 1968 he was first Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for the Irish-speaking Areas ( Gaeltacht ). As part of a government reshuffle, Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) Jack Lynch appointed him in March 1969, initially as Minister for the Gaeltacht and as Minister for Lands. However, three months later, on July 2, 1969, he took over the post of Minister of Education and held this until the end of Lynch's tenure on March 14, 1973.

After the Fianna Fáil won again, Prime Minister Lynch appointed him Minister of Post and Telegraphy on July 5, 1977, and Minister of Transport and Energy, which in September 1977 was renamed Ministry of Tourism and Transport. After Charles J. Haughey von Lynch took over the office of Prime Minister on December 12, 1979, Faulkner was appointed Minister of Defense when the government was reformed. He held this office until his resignation on October 16, 1980.

On that day he was elected as the successor to Joseph Brennan, who died on July 13, 1980, as chairman ( Ceann Comhairle ) of the Dáil Éireann. However, he only retained this office until the Fianna Fáil was defeated on June 30, 1981. This meant that Faulkner had the shortest term of office of an Irish speaker after Cathal Brugha . In 1987 he decided not to run again and left the House of Commons.
