Martin O'Donoghue

Martin O'Donoghue (born May 13, 1933 in Dublin ; † July 20, 2018 there ) was an Irish economist , university professor and politician of the Fianna Fáil .

biography

After attending school, he studied economics and was later from 1970 to 1973 economic advisor to Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) Jack Lynch and professor of economics at Trinity College in Dublin .

He began his national political career as a candidate for the Fianna Fáil with the election of deputy ( Teachta Dála ) of the lower house ( Dáil Éireann ), in which he represented the interests of the constituency of Dún Laoghaire until 1982 .

After the Fianna Fáil electoral victory, he was appointed Minister without Portfolio by Prime Minister Jack Lynch to the Cabinet on July 8, 1977 , but was there responsible for Economic Planning and Development and held this position until Lynch's successor Charles J. Haughey took office on December 11, 1979.

Haughey appointed him on March 9, 1982 as Minister of Education in his second government. O'Donoghue, however, resigned on October 6, 1982 before Haughey's tenure ended.

After leaving the House of Commons, he was a member of the Senate ( Seanad Éireann ) from 1983 to 1987 , where he represented the administration group. In 1987 he decided not to run again for the Senate and resumed teaching as an economics professor.

Most recently, between 1998 and April 2008, Martin O'Donoghue was Director of the Central Bank and Financial Services Authority of Ireland (Banc Ceannais agus Údarás Seirbhísí Airgeadais na hÉireann), the Irish Central Bank and Financial Market Authority .

O'Donoghue died in Dublin in July 2018 at the age of 85.
