Richard Burke

Richard "Dick" Burke (born March 28, 1932 in New York , United States , † March 15, 2016 ) was an Irish politician and European Commissioner .

Burke was born in New York State in 1932. He trained at the Congregation of Christian Brothers School in Thurles , University College in Dublin, and King's Inns . He worked as a teacher before embarking on a political career.

His first political involvement was the founding of the Christian Democratic Party of Ireland by Seán Loftus . But he soon became a member of the Fine Gael . In 1967 he became a member of the County Dublin Council . Two years later he became a member of the Irish House of Commons for County Dublin.

In 1973 he became Minister of Education in the new Fine Gael coalition with the Irish Labor Party . In 1976 he prevailed against Justin Keating as Irish EC Commissioner, since the previous Commissioner Patrick Hillery became President of Ireland . Burke's responsibilities on the commission from 1977 to 1981 were tax , transport and consumers . From 1981 to 1985 he was the President's Delegate responsible for Human Resources and Administration , Statistical Affairs and the Official Publications Bureau.
