Thurles ( Irish : Durlas or Dúrlas Éile ) is a town in County Tipperary in the Republic of Ireland . It is located on the Suir River and, including the surrounding area, has 7940 inhabitants (as of 2016).

history

The Carmelite monastery founded on site by the Butler family around 1300 was dissolved in 1540 by James Butler, Earl of Ormond. On November 1, 1884, the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) for the Preservation and Cultivation of National Pastimes was founded at Miss Hayes's Commercial Hotel in Thurles .

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cashel and Emly is based in Thurles. On the east side of the city is the Assumption Cathedral .

Sports

The city is home to one of the largest sports stadiums in Ireland, Semple Stadium . It has a capacity of 55,000 and is mainly used for Gaelic football and hurling .

Personalities

Tony Ryan (1936–2007), one of the founders of Ryanair , Kerry Condon (* 1983), actress, and Mary Hanafin (* 1959), politician, were born in Thurles.
