Mary Hanafin ( Irish Máire Ní Ainifín , born June 1, 1959 in Thurles , County Tipperary ) is an Irish politician and was most recently Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport of the Republic of Ireland.

Hanafin attended St. Patrick's College in Maynooth and the Dublin Institute of Technology. From 1985 to 1991 she was a member of the City Council of Dublin ( Dublin City Council ). 1989 Hanafine ran unsuccessfully in the constituency of Dublin South East as Fianna Fáil candidate for a seat in the Dáil Éireann . It was not until 1997 that she managed to move into the lower house of the Irish Parliament for the constituency of Dún Laoghaire . In the following elections in 2002 and 2007 she was able to defend her mandate. As Teachta Dála, she held various posts as Minister of State from 2000 to 2004 , before being appointed Minister for Education and Science in 2004. Hanafin held this office until May 2008 when she became Minister of Social Affairs and Family. In 2010 she moved to the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport.

Hanafin is the daughter of Irish politician and Senator Desmond Hanafin . Her brother John Hanafin is also a Senator in the Seanad Éireann . Prior to her election in 1997, Hanafin taught Irish and history at Dominican College, Blackrock , Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County .
