John Hanafin

John Gerard Hanafin (born September 27, 1960 in Thurles , County Tipperary ) is an Irish politician ( Fianna Fáil ).

Hanafin attended the Christian Brothers School in Thurles, the Cistercian College in Roscrea and the University College Dublin . At the latter he received a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in history and geography. He also studied at the Marketing Institute of Ireland , the Institute of Public Administration and the King's Inns .

From 1988 he was a member of the North Tipperary County Council . After his election in 2002 in the Seanad Éireann , however, he left the county council . His vacant seat there was taken over by his cousin Seamus Hanafin. In 2007 Hanafin was again in the Seanad Éireann. In July 2010 he resigned from the Fianna Fáil together with Labhrás Ó Murchú and Jim Walsh in protest against the government's Civil Partnership Bill . The three of them rejoined the party in November of the same year.

Hanafin is married and has three children, two sons and a daughter. He is the son of Irish politician and Senator Desmond Hanafin . His sister Mary Hanafin was also active as a politician.
