Roscrea ( Irish : Ros Cré ) is a town in County Tipperary in the central southern interior of the Republic of Ireland . The city had 5446 inhabitants in 2016

Emergence

The place developed around a former monastery to a once important trading town; its Irish name Ros Cré means "forest of the Cré" (former female name). Ros Cré is also the name of the titular bishopric of the Roman Catholic Church in Ireland located here .

present

Today Roscrea is mainly a traffic junction and industrial city (especially meat and pharmaceuticals), without having won representatives of promising top industries to any significant extent. Their population was determined in the 2016 Census at 5,446 people.

Roscrea is located in the far north-east of County Tipperary, on the border with County Offaly , between Port Laoise and Nenagh on the major national road N7 from Dublin to Limerick , which continues on to Kerry in the touristically popular Irish south-west. Roscrea is 122 km from Dublin and 71 km from Limerick City. A bypass will be created in the course of expanding the N7 . The N7 crosses in Roscrea with the N62 , which leads from Athlone in the north via Thurles to the N8 to Cork and the N24 to Waterford .

To the rail in Ireland Roscrea is through the commuter system of Iarnród Éireann connected. The local train station opened in 1857. In addition, several bus routes from Bus Éireann and JJ Kavanagh connect the city to national passenger transport.

Eight kilometers northwest of Roscrea, near Templemore , in the Timoney Hills are the Timoney Stones (Irish Clocha Tuaim Eabhna), a menhir group that does not follow any recognizable pattern.
