Nenagh ( Irish : An tAonach , also Aonach Urmhumhan "Fair East Munster") is with 8968 inhabitants (2016) the largest city in the north of County Tipperary in Ireland and the administrative seat of North Tipperary . It is located on the River Nenagh , which flows seven kilometers further north at Dromineer into Lough Derg . To the south of the city are the Silvermine Mountains.

Nenagh was originally a market town with the Gaelic name Aonach Urmhumhan , which means "Ormond Market". Today Nenagh is a center of commerce and industry.

architecture

One of the most significant structures in the city is Nenagh Castle , a tower house that was built by the Butler family around 1217 and is considered one of the most beautiful in Ireland. It measures about 16 meters in width and is over 30 meters high.

Further architectural monuments are the hospital of the Kreuzherren founded around 1200 and the ruins of the Franciscan monastery founded around 1250 .
