Clonmel ( Irish : Cluain Meala = honey meadow) is a town in the south of Tipperary County in the Republic of Ireland and the administrative seat of South Tipperary . It has 14,257 inhabitants (2016).
location
The city lies in a valley which is bordered by a series of mountains. The Comeragh Mountains (Sléibhte an Chomaraigh) lie in the south, while the Slievenamon (Sliabh na mBan) lies in the east of the city . The Suir flows through Clonmel .
history
In the Middle Ages , Clonmel grew very rapidly and many remains from that period can be found to this day. Once the city was completely surrounded by a city wall, of which only a small part is preserved today. Oliver Cromwell besieged Clonmel in 1650 and eventually captured it, albeit with heavy losses of his own.
Economy and Transport
The city has always had a rich business life. In the past, inland shipping across the Suir was the basis for rich trade. Later Clonmel was connected to the Waterford - Limerick rail link ; the city is also on the N24 between Limerick and Waterford.
Today Clonmel is mainly known in Ireland for the production of the Bulmers Original Irish Cider variety , which is marketed outside Ireland under the name Magners to avoid confusion with the English Bulmers Original of the same name .
The pharmaceutical company STADA also operates a production facility in Clonmel.
Attractions
One of the most striking buildings in the city is the Old St. Mary's Church . Like many churches in Ireland, it was built long ago (probably the 13th century) and has been renovated and rebuilt many times later. Soon after it was built, the church was fortified as the city gained strategic importance for the Earls of Ormonde and later the Earls of Kildare . During the siege by Cromwell, parts of this fortified church were destroyed.
