Terry McHugh

Terry McHugh (born August 22, 1963 in Clonmel , County Tipperary ) is a retired Irish javelin thrower .

McHugh was tenth at the World Athletics Championships in 1993 in Stuttgart and seventh at the European Athletics Championships in Helsinki in 1994 . He qualified for four Olympic Games - 1998 Seoul (22nd), 1992 Barcelona (27th), 1996 Atlanta (29th) and 2000 Sydney (20th). He won 21 national titles in a row from 1984 to 2004.

His personal best was 82.75, achieved in August 2000 in London . This is still the Irish record.

McHugh also took part in two Winter Olympics - 1992 in Albertville (32nd in the two-man bobsleigh) and 1998 in Nagano (27th in the two-man bobsleigh and 30th in the four-man bobsleigh).

He became close friends with his bobsleigh teammate and former discus throwing champion Garry Power (whose family came from Dungarvan , Co. Waterford), who now teaches at a school in England. McHugh lives in Switzerland with his wife Daniela (a former Swiss 400m runner) and a son.

After the sailor David Wilkins , he is the second Irish athlete to have participated in five Olympic Games.
