Slievenamon ( Irish Sliabh na mBan , dt. "Mountain of women") is the name of a mountain in the south of County Tipperary in Ireland , which is 721 meters high. It is located near the town of Clonmel and forms the western end of a chain of low hills.
Legends
There are many Irish myths about the mountain.
- The children of Lir came here to visit Bodb Derg ( Oidheadh Chlainne Lir , "The Story of the Children of Lir").
- Eochaid dug up a fairy hill there to find his beloved Étaín ( Togail Bruidne Da Derga , "The Destruction of the Hall Da Dergas").
- The swineherd Rucht was in service here before he became a white bull ( De chophur in da muccida , "On the transformation [?] Of the two swineherd").
- Here is one of Fionn mac Cumhaill's stone thrones from where he was chasing the hunt
Folk custom
Irish races to the top refer to a myth that the mythical warrior Fionn sought a new bride. He invited all the beautiful girls of Ireland to a race for his hand. However, by magic he arranged it so that Gráinne was the first to arrive. This is a popular version of Diarmuid and Gráinne .
In 1992, the races up the mountain, which used to be part of the Lughnasa ceremonies as "Ras Sliabh na mBan" , were officially reintroduced.
Charles Kickham, the writer, journalist and revolutionary (he was a prominent member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood - IRB ) dedicated his song Slievenamon to the mountain , which became a kind of hymn for Tipperary.
