Seán Treacy (politician)

Seán Treacy ( Irish Seán Ó Treasaigh ; born September 22, 1923 in Clonmel , Co Tipperary ; † March 23, 2018 ibid) was an Irish politician of the Irish Labor Party and chairman ( Ceann Comhairle ) of the Dáil Éireann , the lower house of the Irish Parliament .

Life

Seán Treacy worked in a factory for the shoe and boot industry. In 1961 he was elected to the Dáil Éireann for the first time as a candidate for the Irish Labor Party. There he represented the interests of the constituency Tipperary South for 36 years until 1997 .

After the election in 1973 to the 19th Dáil Éireann, he became its chairman on March 14, 1973 for the first time (Ceann Comhairle) . He held this office until May 25, 1977. In this capacity he was next to Senate President (Cathaoirleach) James Dooge and the President of the Supreme Court, Thomas F. In 1997 he left the Dáil and handed over the office of President of Parliament to his party friend Séamus Pattison . Treacy was the only chairman of the Dáil Éireann to date to hold this office twice.

Seán Treacy died in March 2018 at the age of 94 in his native Clonmel. Irish President Michael D. Higgins also took part in the funeral for Treacy .
