Presidential Commission (Ireland)

The Presidential Commission ( Irish Coimisiún na hUachtaránachta , "Commission of the Presidency") is a collective body of the Republic of Ireland and is considered to represent the President in his absence. The venue is Áras an Uachtaráin .

In detail, the Presidential Commission comprises the following persons:

Powers

The Commission may take over all the duties and functions of the President of Ireland ,

  • if the president is unable to perform his duties due to death, resignation or ongoing impeachment proceedings
  • in the period between the end of the term of office of the old and the inauguration of a new president
  • if the president is temporarily unable to exercise his office, e.g. B. due to illness, visits abroad or other activities
  • when the President refuses to perform his office

The commission was created by the Irish Constitution of 1937 and met for the first time in December 1937 (entry into force of the Constitution) and June 1938 (inauguration of the 1st President). Since no Irish Senate was elected in the early days, the President of the Supreme Court (An Ard-Chúirt) took over the seat of the Cathaoirleach .
