Cathaoirleach
Cathaoirleach (pronunciation: [ ˈkaˌhiːɾʲlʲəx ], Irish , to cathaoir "chair", see the corresponding use of English "chair") is the official title of the chairman of the Irish House of Lords ( Seanad Éireann ). The rights of the Cathaoirleach include u. a .:
- the granting of the right to speak,
- bringing questions to the House of Lords, monitoring their progress and announcing the result,
- in cases of serious offenses, the dismissal of parliamentarians or the issuing of a house ban,
- the (temporary) exclusion of members of the House of Lords from the Seanad through the house rules.
The Cathaoirleach is ex officio a member of the Chairman's Commission, which acts as Ireland's Vice-President. The term Cathaoirleach is widely used in Ireland to refer to the chairs of various organizations.
