Liam T. Cosgrave

Liam Thomas Cosgrave, Junior ( Irish : Liam Tomás Mac Cosgair ) (born April 30, 1956 ) is an Irish politician of the Fine Gael .

biography

Cosgrave came from an influential political family. His grandfather William Thomas Cosgrave was the first President of the Executive Council between 1922 and 1932 and thus de facto Prime Minister of the Irish Free State , while his father Liam Cosgrave was not only Minister of Foreign Affairs and Defense, but also Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) . After attending school, he studied law himself and then worked as a solicitor .

He began his political career in 1981 when he was elected as a candidate for Fine Gael to the House of Commons ( Dáil Éireann ) and represented the constituency of Dún Laoghaire in this until his electoral defeat in 1987 . He then ran again unsuccessfully for the House of Commons in both 1989 and 1992.

In 1989 he was elected a member of the Senate ( Seanad Éireann ) and represented the Industry and Finance Group, the so-called Industrial and Commercial Panel, until 2002 . Between November 27, 1996 and September 11, 1997 he was Cathaoirleach and thus President of the Senate. Subsequently, he was Vice President of the Senate from September 18, 1997 until he left the Senate on September 11, 2002 ( Leas-Chathaoirleach ).

In 1999 he was elected to the County Council ( County Council ) of Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown and belonged to this until 2004, while he failed again with another candidacy for the lower house in the elections on May 17, 2002.

Most recently, Cosgrave was involved in corruption scandals and was sentenced to 75 hours of social work on May 26, 2006 after an admission of guilt. Proceedings due to opaque real estate transactions had not yet been completed in late autumn 2010.
