Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown ( Irish : Dún Laoghaire-Ráth an Dúin ) is a county in the Republic of Ireland . It is not one of the country's 26 historic counties , but was created on January 1, 1994 when County Dublin was administratively divided. The double name was originally intended to be only a temporary solution; to date, however, it has not yet been possible to agree on another name.

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown is the smallest county in Ireland in terms of area. It extends southeast of the city of Dublin from the Irish Sea to the foothills of the Wicklow Mountains . It is bounded to the south and west by Wicklow and South Dublin Counties .

The most important connections with Dublin are the DART train connection along the coast and the green Luas line. Dún Laoghaire is an important ferry port. The connection to Holyhead in North Wales is a popular route for tourists traveling to Ireland by car.
