Kilkenny ( Irish : Cill Chainnigh ) is a county ( county ) in the southeast of the Republic of Ireland in the region Leinster . It is named after Kilkenny , the largest city in it.

The county is characterized by a fertile basin through which the Suir , Nore and Barrow rivers flow . To the west are the Slieveardagh Hills . Almost 90% of the land is used for agriculture.

history

In 1171 the area was conquered by the Anglo- Normans. The county was established in 1210. The city of Kilkenny was the capital of the Kingdom of Ossory .

economy

Livestock ( sheep , cattle and pigs ) are farmed on around two-thirds of the county's agricultural area . The agriculture extends to the cultivation of barley and wheat . There is textile, furniture, canning and brewing industries. The county's lead , iron ore , and coal mines were active between the 16th and 18th centuries .
