Aghaviller
Aghaviller ( Irish Áth an Bhiolair , "ford of the cress") is a townland in County Kilkenny in Ireland , which is mainly known for its round tower . Aghaviller is about 20 km south of Kilkenny town on the R701 regional road.
Round tower
The round tower, well preserved up to a height of 9.6 m, probably dates from the 11th century. The original doorway begins at a height of 4 m and is closed by a round arch. A window opening with a triangular tip is just below the upper edge of the wall.
There is a second, ground level entrance that was built in much later.
The tower stands on a square stone base. Only the round tower of Kilree , which is a few kilometers away, has this characteristic .
Church ruin
There is another ruin next to the round tower. This was a church, probably built in the 12th or 13th century, which was converted into a fortified house around 1600. Some time later the building was used as a church again. Inside this building you can climb the first floor on a stone staircase and from there you have a good view of the round tower.
