Kilmogue dolmen

Leac to Scail , the Kilmogue dolmen.

The Kilmogue Dolmen (also called Leac an Scail - "a warrior's stone" or "Harristown dolmen"; not to be confused with the Entrance Grave of Harristown ) is the tallest Tomb portal in the Republic of Ireland and after Goward in County Down in Northern Ireland , the second largest on the island . It is near Pilltown and Mullinavat in County Kilkenny , west of the hamlet of Harristown. In the British Isles, portal tombs are megalithic systems in which two equally high, upright stones with a door stone in between form the front of a chamber, which is covered with a sometimes huge capstone.

Not to be confused with the passage Tomb of the same name in County Waterford .

The two approximately 3.7 m high portal stones support a typically shaped capstone, here about four meters long, the rear end of which does not rest on the end stone, as usual, but on a cushion stone. In the entrance, which is in the northeast, there is a door stone almost three meters high. A menhir stands in the same field. Nearby is the Passage Tomb of Harristown , an aisle-free chamber in the curb-enclosed round hill, which apart from the typical location in the round hill, which is only typical for Passage Tombs, is more reminiscent of a wedge tomb .
