Goward

The Portal Tomb of Goward (including Pat Kearney's Big Stone or Cloughmore Cromlech called) is between Hilltown and Castlewellan in County Down in Northern Ireland .

Goward

The huge capstone of the largest Portal Tomb in the British Isles has slipped from its original more horizontal position and is now at an angle, up to a height of 4.3 m. The granite capstone, about four meters long and three meters wide, is over two meters thick at the front. Its weight is estimated at 50 tons. The stone protruding on the north side stands on its portal stones in front, while the end stone has overturned. The unsegmented chamber with the entrance to the east is 2.7 m long. In the chamber 1843 were urn and arrowhead of flint found. Orthostats appear to be the remains of an exedra .

The Goward Dolmen is under state protection by the Newry and Morne District Councils. About 3.2 km northeast of Hilltown is the Court Tomb , excavated in 1932 , the "Horned Cairn at Goward". The Court Tomb has three chambers and a well-preserved facade. Finds in the first chamber consisted of axes, Neolithic type ceramics and no human bones.
