South Dublin ( Irish : Áth Cliath Theas ) is a county in the Republic of Ireland . It is not one of the country's 26 historic counties , but was created on January 1, 1994 when County Dublin was administratively divided. The administrative seat is Tallaght .

The county's original name was Belgard. This was the name of a medieval frontier fortress on the edge of the Pale in what is now the county. In order to avoid confusion with the newly created Tallaghter district of Belgard, the official name was changed to "South Dublin" in 1994.

The South Dublin area is located southwest of the city of Dublin . It stretches from the Liffey near Lucan in the north to the foothills of the Wicklow Mountains in the south. There it borders on the counties of Wicklow and Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown .
