The Carlow area has been inhabited for thousands of years. St Mullins Monastery was probably founded around the 7th century. Carlow Castle had William Marshal , Earl of Pembroke and Lord of Leinster and Striguil built between 1207 and 1213 to protect the vital river crossing. Saint Patrick's College dates back to 1793 and the Carlower Courthouse was built in the 19th century. The Liberty Tree Fountain in Carlow Center commemorates the defeat of the United Irishmen in 1798. In 1650, during Cromwell's conquest of Ireland, Carlow was occupied by English troops, soon followed by the surrender of Waterford City. During an attempted rebellion by the United Irishmen in 1798, Carlow was the scene of a massacre of 600 rebels and civilians. The Liberty Tree sculpture in Carlow, designed by John Behan, commemorates the events now known as the "Battle of Carlow".
