history
Stone Age traces can be found in the rock carvings of Baltynanima .
The area called Wykinglo had belonged to the Viking Kingdom of Dublin since the beginning of the 10th century and served as a retreat for the Irish from the Anglo-Norman conquerors in the 12th century because of its inaccessible mountain landscape . The area was not conquered by the English until the early 17th century. The county was the last to be established in Ireland in 1606.

economy
In the coastal plain, arable farming with wheat, barley and oats predominates, in the mountainous region sheep breeding predominates. The north of the county is part of the Dublin economic catchment area . There are textile and electrical industries. In Avoca, copper has been mined intermittently since around 1720. The last time the mining was operated from 1955 to 1982.
In the Wicklow Mountains and in Glendalough in particular, tourism within and outside Ireland plays an important role.
