Louth [ laʊð ] ( Irish : ) is a county ( county ) in the Republic of Ireland . The name of the county refers to the small village of Louth or the Celtic god Lugh (Irish: Lughbhadh ).

geography

The county includes the Carlingford Peninsula, which lies between Carlingford and Dundalk Bay, and the Ice Age coastal plain southwest of it. The highest point is Carlingford Mountain at 587 meters. At 832 square kilometers, Louth is the smallest of the historic Irish counties in terms of area.

history

Louth takes part in the prehistoric development of Ireland, but is a county particularly distinguished by myths and legends. In the Táin Bó Cúailnge it is associated with the "cattle robbery of Cooley " and the victory of the mythological hero Cúchulainn . The name Carlingford indicates the presence of Vikings through the suffix "ford" (as in Waterford and Wexford , from Nordic Fjord ) . In the early 14th century, the Scottish army was defeated by Edward the Bruce (brother of King Robert I ) of Scotland at the Battle of Faughart near Dundalk. Edward is losing his life. In 1649 Oliver Cromwell destroyed the royalist garrison at Drogheda . Notable new finds were made in connection with the construction of the M1 motorway .

economy

The economy is concentrated in the port cities of Dundalk and Drogheda. The land is mainly used for growing barley, wheat, oats and potatoes.
