Termonfekin Castle

Termonfeckin ( Irish : Tearmann Feichín ) is a village in County Louth in Ireland . It is located in the south of County Louth, 8 km northeast of Drogheda near the Irish Sea .

history

In the early Middle Ages there was a monastery in the village, which is said to have been founded in the 7th century by the Irish saint Feichín. This monastery was sacked by the people of Leinster and the Vikings in 1013, 1025 and finally in 1149 .

An Augustinian monastery was founded in the village in the 12th century . A convention of Augustinian nuns followed shortly afterwards. The convent existed until 1540 and was closed by Henry VIII during the Reformation .

economy

The most important branch of the economy in the place is agriculture. Tourism is based on the proximity to the sea and some golf courses in the area.

population

The population of Termonfeckin was determined in the 2016 census with 1579 people, which corresponds to a tripling of the population compared to the 1996 census.

The regional roads R166 and R167 run through the town.

Termonfeckin Castle

Termonfeckin Castle was built as a three-story building in the 15th or 16th centuries. It was damaged in the uprising of 1641 but was rebuilt by Captain Brabazon. Today it is a national monument.

Former Primate's Castle

There was a second castle in Termonfeckin until the early 19th century. This Primate's Castle was used by the Archbishops of Armagh as a second residence next to the headquarters at Drogheda for several centuries . After the Reformation, some Protestant archbishops also used the castle at times. It was damaged in the uprising of 1641, never rebuilt and finally demolished around 1830.

There is a high cross in the cemetery of St. Fechin's Church .

To Grianán

At Grianán there is a building erected in the 18th century, which is considered the first educational institution in the place. Today it is owned by the Irish Countrywomen's Association and serves various social and educational purposes.
