StadtRegionalBahn Kiel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The StadtRegionalBahn Kiel (SRB) was the name of a planned two-system light rail network , which was intended to improve the public transport offer and the traffic situation in the city of Kiel and the entire Kiel region. Designed according to the example of the Karlsruhe model , the planned tram routes should better connect Kiel city center with the region. After a negative decision by the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district council in December 2014, the plans are on hold. In May 2015, the preliminary end of the “StadtRegionalBahn Kiel” project was announced by Kiel's Lord Mayor Ulf Kämpfer (SPD).

In January 2016, the Kiel Council decided to start planning a purely inner-city light rail system for the time being.

history

Until 1985

From 1881 to 1985 there was already a tram in Kiel that ran on tracks with a gauge of 1,100 millimeters. This unusual gauge was otherwise only found on the Lübeck tram (which was shut down in 1959) and the Braunschweig tram (which still exists today) . The gauge is based on a modification of the (much more common) Cape gauge of 1067 millimeters and may have been a reason for the closure at a time when the renaissance of the tram had already begun elsewhere .

2008

A concept was developed in the 2008 traffic development plan. In September 2008 the City Council of Kiel passed a resolution mandating the administration to implement the concept of the StadtRegionalBahn for the Kiel region and to initiate further steps.

It was still undetermined which parts of the network were to be realized and in what period of time. The previous schedule provided for the draft planning approval for 2010 and a construction period from 2012 to 2017.

2013

In January 2013 the online portal nahverkehrhamburg.de reported that the state authority LVS should prepare the tender for a design plan. This was agreed by the cities, districts and the state affected by the tram at a joint top meeting on the regional tram in Kiel. At the meeting, the participants agreed on a key issues paper. The preparations for the call for tenders should be completed by June 2013, after which a further meeting should take place. In addition, an image campaign for the city-regional railway was agreed in the key issues paper. The aim is to bring the benefits of the urban regional railway (SRB) even closer to people than was previously the case. Overall, the construction of the railway should cost around 380 million euros, of which at least 60 percent could be paid for from federal subsidies. To do this, those involved in the project would have to pay a total of 14.6 million euros in operating costs per year. The state had already promised to take over 6.1 million euros, which would correspond to a share of around 40 percent. According to information from the Kieler Nachrichten, the city of Kiel would have to pay around 4.7 million euros annually, Neumünster 300,000 euros, the Plön district would have operating costs of 1.2 million euros and the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district 1.6 million euros.

On Sunday, April 21, 2013, as part of the “Klima & Energie Kiel 2013” trade fair, a public information event on the subject of “Kiel on its way to the StadtRegionalBahn” took place in the council chamber of the city of Kiel. The event was organized by the state-wide transport service company in cooperation with Pro StadtRegionalBahn e. V. carried out. One of the issues at the event was that from 2015 regional trains should run every hour from Kiel main station to Schönkirchen in just 13 minutes with stops in Ellerbek and Oppendorf and then on to Schönberger Strand in 26 minutes. For the pupils of the education center in Gaarden there will be another stop on Preetzer Straße. The aim of the state-wide transport service company is therefore to reactivate the old "Hein-Schönberg" route as early as 2015. According to the state-wide transport service company, trainees and commuters in particular are already using stops that have been successfully reopened, such as in Elmschenhagen , Suchsdorf and Felde .

2014

At the beginning of November 2014, plans became known according to which the “StadtRegionalBahn Kiel” project should now be partially implemented despite great criticism from several sides. Initially, they wanted to start building a light rail line from Kiel to the surrounding area. Before construction began, the citizens of Kiel should vote on the construction of the new light rail line. Only after the construction of the first line should the citizens of the surrounding districts be asked about the construction of further light rail lines. This will be after 2020. The city of Kiel assumes the largest share of the planning costs totaling 7.5 million euros with still 5.25 million euros, the share of the two districts involved ( district Plön and district Rendsburg-Eckernförde ) would have fallen to a total of 375,000 euros. The state of Schleswig-Holstein should have contributed 25 percent to the project planning. Instead of its own company, the existing regional transport service company (LVS) should take over the planning of the project. According to the representatives, a compromise on costs seemed to have been found between the circles involved and the city of Kiel. After a negative decision by the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district council in December 2014, in which two representatives of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen also voted against the project, the plans are now on hold.

2015

In May 2015, the mayor of Kiel Ulf Kämpfer (SPD) announced the temporary end of the “StadtRegionalBahn Kiel” project . Since the surrounding districts (except Plön district) could not get used to the idea of the "StadtRegionalBahn Kiel", Kiel will now concentrate on a tram within the city area. If necessary, this can still be expanded beyond the city limits. The Kiel – Schönberger Strand route should also play a role in these plans . In the meantime, the city of Kiel estimates that the number of inbound and outbound commuters has risen to more than 100,000 people, many of whom currently have to accept a time-consuming change at Kiel Central Station . In addition, the expansion of the “Hein-Schönberg” route for conventional regional traffic is to be pushed ahead, which is why the platforms are to be raised to a height of 76 centimeters. Separate platforms would be required for barrier-free access to low-floor trams .

2018

The plans were reconsidered at the beginning of 2018. In a meeting on March 15, it was decided to continue the urban regional railway's planning for a line. This is intended to counteract a diesel driving ban. If the talks and plans are positive, a tram could run through Kiel again in a few years.

Five main lines are planned in the light rail network. Lines S2 and S3 are divided into A and B, so that there are seven individual lines. Only the city center lines S1 and S4 run every 15 minutes, on all other lines every 30 minutes. However, overlapping results in much shorter cycle intervals, especially on the main routes.

S1

The S1 Wik - Neumühlen line is to run exclusively in the city of Kiel and form the core line of the entire network. The entire route is to be run as a tram, system changes are not planned. A quarter of an hour is strived for. The course of this line is similar to the last tram line 4, which was closed in 1985, and today's bus line 11.

S2

The line S2 Suchsdorf - Neumünster / - Preetz is to consist of the two sub-lines S2A (to Preetz) and S2B (to Neumünster), the section Suchsdorf - Gablenzstraße is to be served together, and this is to be the tram section of the line while on the sections to Neumünster and Preetz mixed operation with full-line trains is planned. The Gablenzstraße - Preetz section still has to be electrified.

The two partial lines are to be served every half hour, so that there is a quarter of an hour on the jointly served route.

S3

Line S3 Melsdorf - Raisdorf / - Schönberger Strand is to be run jointly on the Melsdorf –Gablenzbrücke section . From there, the S3A line to Raisdorf and the S3B line on the Kiel – Schönberg railway line to Schönberger Strand . The section Melsdorf - Seefischmarkt is to be built as a tram line, the two outer branches are existing railway lines, but they are still to be converted for light rail operation.

The Melsdorf –Gablenzstraße section is to be served every 15 minutes, the two outer branches every 30 minutes.

S4

The S4 Melsdorf - Wik line , like the S1 line, is to run exclusively in the city of Kiel (apart from the direct neighboring town of Melsdorf). It is the only line that is not supposed to go to Kiel Central Station and is also to be built as a tram.

A 15-minute cycle should be set up on the entire line.

S5

The S5 Eckernförde - Neumühlen line is the second longest route that the Kiel Stadtbahn is to use. On the Neumühlen –Klausbrooker Weg section, the line is to be implemented as a tram line, while the Klausbrooker Weg– Eckernförde section is a railway line, but has yet to be made "suitable for city railways".

The line is to be operated continuously every 30 minutes.
