The Wilhelmplatz (until 1896 “New Market Place”, since then also: “Platz der Republik”) is a central square in Kiel . It is the second large city square in Kiel.

location

Wilhelmplatz is bordered by Eckernförder Straße, Stephan-Heinzel-Straße, Kronshagener Weg and Wilhelmplatz.

Historical development and use until today

Wilhelmplatz was laid out in 1893 as a market and parade area for the Kiel garrison on what was then the garden area. In 1896 the square, which was once called “New Market Place”, was renamed Wilhelmplatz after Kaiser Wilhelm I. In 1918, Gustav Noske , a member of the Reichstag, was elected chairman of the workers' and soldiers' council on Wilhelmplatz during the Kiel sailors' uprising . As a result, the city council of Kiel decided in 1927 to rename Wilhelmplatz to “Platz der Republik”. When the National Socialists came to power , the square was renamed Wilhelmplatz again. Wilhelmplatz was a parade ground for the Prussian state power and a rally site during the November Revolution . Furthermore, Wilhelmplatz was also used as a football field until the inauguration of the Nordmarksportfeld in 1907 . In 1933, book burnings by the National Socialists were carried out on this square in Kiel . Since 1903 and then again after 1945, fairs and circus events have been held here - until today .

In the south of Wilhelmplatz is the listed building of the former employment office from 1929. It is a functionally emphasized administrative building in the style of the New Building . The former employment office on Wilhelmplatz by Willy Hahn and Rudolf Schroeder is considered a modern architecture under the influence of the Bauhaus and was considered the most modern employment office of its time.

Today, Wilhelmplatz serves as an area for fairs, circus events and Christmas tree stalls in the run-up to Christmas; the rest of the time, Wilhelmplatz is used as a car park .
